Day 01

Arrival in Trondheim

Arrival in Trondheim according to your own itinerary. Trondheim is Norway’s third largest city and was founded by Viking King Olav Tryggvason in 997. The city was Norway’s first capital and continues to be the coronation city where Norway's kings from Harald Hårfagre (10th century) to King Harald V (1991 -) have been crowned and blessed. We recommend a visit at the Nidaros Cathedral, built over the grave of St. Olav. Next to the cathedral you will find the Archbishop’s Palace, the oldest secular building in Scandinavia. Other sights of interest are Kristiansten Fortress, the Monk’s Island, Trøndelag Open Air Museum and Stiftsgården – the Royal Residence in Trondheim. We also recommend a stroll in Bakklandet, located on the east bank of the river Nid. Here you will find old wooden buildings which were formerly worker’s dwellings but are now partly restored as homes or charming shops and restaurants. Accommodation in Trondheim

Day 02

Trondheim – Lillehammer (train)

Breakfast at the hotel. Departure by train from Trondheim to Lillehammer. The 5 hour journey on the Dovre Railway will bring you across the Dovre Mountain and through the Gudbrandsdal Valley to Lillehammer, the host town of the 1994 Winter Olympics. In Lillehammer we recommend a visit at Maihaugen Open Air Museum. The museum reveals the past of the people living in the Gudbrandsdal valley dating back almost 300 years. Experience life between the wars in the inland town of Lillehammer and of homes and the domestic environment during the 20th century. Also recommendable is a visit at the Olympic Museum and the Olympic Arena (Lysgårdsbakken). Accommodation in Lillehammer

Day 03

Lillehammer – Oslo (train)

Breakfast at the hotel. Departure from Lillehammer by train to Oslo. The Norwegian capital is beautifully situated at the head of the Oslo Fjord and surrounded by forested ridges. Oslo offers many well know sights such as the Vigeland Sculpture Park, the Viking Ship Museum, the Munch Museum and Oslo Opera House. Accommodation in Oslo

Day 04

Oslo

Breakfast at the hotel. This day is at your own leisure in Oslo. Accommodation in Oslo

Day 05

Oslo – Geilo (train)

Breakfast at the hotel. Morning departure from Oslo by train. The 4 hour journey from Oslo to Geilo is part of the Oslo – Bergen Railway, classed as one of the finest train journeys in the world. This railway connects the two largest cities in Norway and shows the diversity of the Norwegian landscape and scenery. Accommodation in Geilo

Day 06

Geilo – Nærøyfjord - Bergen (train/boat/bus)

Breakfast at the hotel. Departure by train from Geilo to Myrdal, where you will change to the Flåm Railway. The Flåm Railway passes through wild and beautiful mountain scenery with waterfalls and steep mountain sides reaching a height of up to 900 metres and down to the Sognefjord. There is no other adhesion railway in the world running on normal tracks that is so steep over a long distance. From Flåm you continue by boat on the Nærøyfjord to Gudvangen. The Nærøyfjord is the narrowest fjord channel in Europe, and has recently been added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List. From Gudvangen the journey continues by bus through Nærøyfjord Valley and up the Stalheimskleiva, with its 13 steep hairpin bends (Stalheimskleiva is only open during the summer). The last part of today’s journey will be by train from Voss to Bergen, Norway’s second largest city and the world’s only city surrounded by 7 mountains and 7 fjords. Accommodation in Bergen

Day 07

Bergen

Breakfast at the hotel. This day is at your own leisure. Attractions in Bergen include the Hanseatic Bryggen Harbour, Fløibanen Funicular, Troldhaugen, the Fish and Flower market, Bergen Aquarium and Gamle Bergen (Old Bergen Open Air Museum). Accommodation in Bergen

Day 09

Ålesund / Geirangerfjord (Hurtigruten)

Breakfast onboard Hurtigruten. Today you have the choice between exploring the Art Nouveau city of Ålesund or to follow Hurtigruten on a cruise along the well known Geiranger Fjord (the detour to the Geirangerfjord is available from 16.04. – 15.09). Ålesund was completely destroyed by a devastating town fire in 1904, and rebuilt again in the Art Nouveau style, making it a truly unique town in Europe. The town centre reveals a lively urban scene with pleasant restaurants and cafés, and the picturesque Brosundet canal with its fishing boats. Sights of interest are the Atlantic Sea-Park, one of the largest aquariums in Northern Europe and the Sunnmøre Museum, an open air museum with an impressive boat collection and more than 50 old houses in beautiful surroundings (entrances not included). The beauty of the town can be appreciated from Mount Aksla, with a breathtaking view of the town. Evening departure from Ålesund to Trondheim. Accommodation onboard Hurtigruten
