Slovenia

In the mosaic of this little piece of Central Europe where the nature set mighty Alpine peaks, deepest Karst abysses, softly rounded hills, beautiful lakes and warm waves of the sea, is the enchanting country,Slovenia.

Slovenia is a country of uncountable curiosities which you can discover with your every step. In the mosaic of this little piece of Central Europe, nature set mighty Alpine peaks, deepest Karst abysses, softly rounded hills, beautiful lakes, valuable vegetal and animal particularities, timelessness and quiet of woods, and warm waves of the sea. Slovenia is beautiful in the icy decoration of winter, playful in the blooming of spring and in the warm high summer, and is marvellous when the autumn months colour its countryside.

Geographical position gives the country a unique speciality, since it lies between the ending of the high Alps, woody Dinaric Mountains, mysterious Karst, blue Mediterranean Sea, and endless Pannonia lowlands.

The country lies on the juncture of important traffic ways which connect the North with the South and the West with the East. The first settlements of this area reach far back in the time before Christ. The first remnants were found from prehistory, after that the Romans had their towns here, and in the 6th century the Slavs permanently settled here.

Slovenia has a small, open and very dynamic economy. After the attainment of independence in 1991 from the ex-Yugoslavia, the country quickly stabilised and established new money and economic regulation. In the next few years it became one of the most developed countries in Europe with the help of privatization, deregulation and liberalization. It confirmed its good economic state by becoming a member of the European Union in 2004 and by assuming the currency Euro as the first of at that time acceding countries. The confirmation of good standing was reapproved again in the first half of 2008 when Slovenia took over the presidency of the European Union, again as the first among new members, entering the EU in 2004.

Slovenia Geography

Slovenia stretches across only a little over 20,000 km2, but still there are 11 regions to be found within it, which all have their own unique natural and cultural treasures.

These are mostly dialects, different kinds of architecture and gastronomy. The capital of Slovenia is Ljubljana and it lies in the very heart of the country. Other important regional centres are Maribor, Bled, Portorož, Nova Gorica, Postojna, Novo mesto, Brežice, Celje, Murska Sobota and Dravograd.

These towns and their surroundings are rich with museums, castles, churches, theatres, spas, shopping centres, and sport and recreation objects. In simple words, there is something for everyone in Slovenia.
